We’re recruiting for 2015

18 Sep

American Football has never been bigger in this country, and it remains one of the fastest growing sports in the UK. The Eagles formed last year and have a 50 man strong roster, but we need to add to that in order to compete for a National Championship every year.

If you’ve seen the sport, and always fancied having a go, why not register to try it out at one of our sessions spread throughout the Three Counties area.

Ideally, you’ll show up around 10:30 and complete the basic registration forms. At 11, you’ll come out onto the field where several of our current players will talk you through the sport and you’ll get a chance to see the senior team train. We pride ourselves on being as professional as we can be in everything we do, and you’ll see that in our practices.

Our practices are fast, and will be difficult for the first few weeks until you get used to the pattern. After watching the Senior Team, it’ll be your chance to try it out, doing the same drills you’ve just seen our players doing. The players will be running through the drills with you, under the watchful eye of our qualified coaches.

This isn’t just for the senior team (Aged 18+) though. This year we are also launching our first Youth Team, an Under-17, 5 on 5 version of the game. Aimed at 14-16 years old, it is the best way to get started in the kitted version of the sport.

Our ‘Rookie Sessions’ are open to both men and women, girls and boys, as long as you are aged between 14-16 or Over 18.

If you want to come and try out the sport, free of charge and with no obligation to join, register for the event(s) you can make and we’ll see you there.

Our Milton Keynes Session is on the 5th October, between 11am and 1pm, at Stantonbury Astroturf:
Milton Keynes Come and Try Day

Our first St.Neots Session is on the 12th October, between 11am and 1pm, at Priory Park
St.Neots Come and Try Day

All you need to bring is football/rugby boots, some water, and appropriate clothing to be out running in the weather.

We look forward to seeing you there.

Rookie Days Flyer

Eagles knocked out in Quarter Finals of the National Championship

27 Aug

Sunday the 24th August 2014 will go down as a memorable day in the history of the Ouse Valley Eagles. It was a day that seen a team reach its goals, and strive to go further, only to be quashed in literally, the last few minutes.

The Solent Thrashers were deserving victors in an exciting game, which was a credit to British American Football, and was played the way the game was meant to be played.

With both sides clearly nervous at the start of the game, it was the referees who set the tone for the afternoon, by throwing a flag on the very first play of game. It would not be their last.

After starting on their 20 yard line, the Thrashers were pushed back through various penalties and some stout defense from the Eagles, before they threw an errant pass straight into the arms of Eagles CB Paul Green, who managed to get the ball back to the Solent 5 yard line.

With an extremely short field, it took the Eagles just 3 plays to break through the Solent defense and secure the 1st points of the game, with #31 Yomi Okuboyejo scoring the Eagles first ever post-season points, running in for the touchdown, with Vasco Dias adding the PAT giving the Eagles a 7-0 lead.

The Thrashers returned the ensuing kickoff back to the Eagles 35 yard line, and scored a few plays later through a strong running game.

The first and second quarter generally flew past with neither offense really taking a hold, or getting much of a chance to due to the referees need to throw flags.

Finally the game kicked back into life with around 4 minutes left in the half, the Thrashers broke through again, after a long run from #18. That score was converted to give the Thrashers a 7 point lead.

The Eagles came out strong after that, with QB Stuart Franklin working well with Offensive Co-ordinator Neale McMaster to orchestrate the offense all the way down to the Thrashers 8 yard line. With the Eagles having no timeouts and needing the ball to be spotted to spike it and stop the clock, the half was blown dead with the official walking over to the spot with the ball in his hand. The Thrashers led 14-7 going into the half.

A stern half time team talk from the Eagles HC Will White seemed to work its magic, as the Eagles came out firing from the break, with the Eagles once again working their way all the way down to the Solent 1 yard line, before an errant pass from QB Franklin saw the ball picked off and downed in the End zone.

After several punts were exchanged, it was the Thrashers who were next to break through, with #4, playing offense, defense and special teams for the 60 strong Solent Roster, taking it 55 yards to the house, making the score 21-7.

The following kickoff was received by return specialist Chris Parr, who took the ball back to the Solent 37 yard line.

It took the Eagles only one play to get the score, with #48 Kalaba ‘Kase’ Chibwe speeding in on a draw play. The PAT attempt was good, and the score was 21-14 going into the fourth quarter.

The first quarter started brightly for the Eagles with Safety Danny Lipner intercepting a long pass, giving the Eagles the ball back on their own 15 yard line.

The old connection of Franklin o Dawes was once again in full swing, as they connected on a long fade pattern down the left sideline, taking the ball to the Thrashers 25 yard line.

A quick 7 yard gain from Chibwe set up the touchdown pass, with Franklin connecting with Dawes at the back of the endzone, again on the fade route. The PAT was blocked and the Eagles closed the gap to 21-20.

The ensuing drive saw Solent put together a strong drive, taking the ball down to the Eagles 5 yard line. The drive looked as if it was stalling when 3 downs went for little gain, before on 4th down, in came #4 for the Thrashers who duly walked the ball into the endzone, taking the score line to 28-20.

The Eagles was buoyed by their performance in the 2nd half so far, but an off-target throw was intercepted on the second play of the drive. This seemed to deflate the entire team, and was easily the turning point for the game.

Solent failed to capitalise on the mistake, but a punt from Solent, was matched by a quick 4 and out from the Eagles, before Solent put the dagger in the heart of the Eagles, running in a score after the two minute warning to kill any spirit the Eagles had left.

Knowing their fate, the Eagles battled through, but eventually turned over on downs, allowing Solent to kneel out the game.

Solent, who were 21 point favourites in this game, were well deserving of their victory, but were gracious enough to concede that was easily the hardest game they have played, and will feel relieved they came out of the game with a win.

An underrated Eagles side should feel proud of their accomplishments. There are no other first year teams in the league to have made the playoffs, and despite not being a rookie team, a great deal of hard work has went in to merging the two clubs, and getting the Eagles to compete as a team.

After the game, Head Coach Will White said “We knew it would be a challenge against a very tough team, and it proved to be just that. Myself and my OC Neale McMaster had good game plans, but it was a great chess game between great coaches on both teams.

“In the end, it boiled down to Solent being the better team by taking advantage of some key mistakes. Our hats off to them, they are a great team.”

The Eagles will now enjoy a few weeks break before announcing our rookie days tour locations and dates, and organising off-season events.

Eagles reach playoffs with win over Saints

05 Aug

The Ouse Valley Eagles confirmed their place in the quarter finals of the National League on Sunday, with a win against a good Bury Saints side.

Both teams fielded weakened sides for this match, in what is the height of the holiday season in the UK, however it was the Eagles strength in depth that seen them through a tough fixture.

The Eagles started strong, with a good drive (on an extremely short field), finishing with #8 Stuart Franklin sneaking home from 3 yards out. Vasco Dias converted the kick to make the score 7-0.

The Saints then started with the ball on their own 20, and some rather controversial calls for the home side allowed them to advance for the first down, before finally having to put the ball away. However, it wasn’t long before they got the ball back, as a quick three and out from the Eagles offense put the D back on the field.

Once again, the Saints moved the ball in fits and starts, with some extremely weird and wonderful offensive formations that had even the officials scratching their heads if they we legal or not. 6 plays later the Saints punted the ball back Eagles.

The Eagles O started up once again, driving all the way to the Saints 15 before finally being stopped and kicking the field goal. Vasco Dias added the 3 points taking the score to 10-0.

It didn’t stay that way for long though, 3 plays after the kickoff the Saints broke off a long run after escaping 2 or 3 tacklers, and took the ball to house. The 2 Point conversion was just out of reach of the defender, making the score 10-6 at the end of the first period.

The Eagles started the second half hot, with both Kalaba ‘Kase’ Chibwe and rookie Zak Henry carrying the load, with Henry scoring his first ever touchdown on a 5 yard scamper into the end zone. Vasco Dias kicked the extra point and the Eagles extended their lead, 17-6.

As usual, the Eagles defense was strong, and got the Offense the ball back quickly, who quickly converted that possession into points, with Rick Price bowling people over on his way to six points. The PAT was no good and the Eagles moved further ahead, 23-6.

With Half time looming, it seemed a few Eagles players had taken a break a bit early, and Bury ran home their second touchdown of the day just before halftime. The PAT was good and the Eagles went into the break 23-12 up.

The Eagles special teams kicked into gear on the opening kickoff, with Chris Parr returning the full length of the field for an 80 yard kickoff return. The Eagles Offense wanted to get moving after a long first half and half time, and completed the 2 Point attempt, moving the score line to 29-13.

A few drives later, the Saints scored again, on a broken play, the QB made a short shovel pass as he was getting sacked, the Saints RB then took the ball all the way home, as he took off down the sideline. The 2 PAT was good, and brought Saints close again, with the score now 29-20.

Then it turned into the Kase Chibwe show, with #48 gaining both the hard yards and then breaking to the outside on a long run for the 6 points. #8 Franklin converted the following 2 points and the Eagles pulled away, 37-20.

Following another Chris Parr interception, #48 Chibwe took over again, behind a strong Eagles OL, and buried the Saints with another TD late in the game. The fumbled snap on the PAT meant Kicker Dale Hawes had to try and throw and pass, and that wasn’t a good situation for anyone, so the PAT attempt was missed.

The Final score was 43-20.

Head Coach Will White had the following to say “I can’t say enough about the team, how everyone has come together over the last few weeks. We are truly becoming a family. We have 2 weeks now to get prepared for the playoffs, we will be ready come the 24th August!”

With that win the Eagles have now guaranteed themselves a place in the quarter finals in their inaugural season.

The opposition hasn’t been confirmed yet, but it is very likely we will be playing Solent Thrashers, in Southampton, on 24th August. We will confirm this fixture as soon as the season has ended.

Eagles exile Kent from Playoff race

01 Aug

In a game that was largely downplayed by the media leading up to it, the Ouse Valley Eagles walked away from the biggest game of the season against Kent Exiles with a win, and have all but confirmed their spot in the playoffs, pushing Kent out of contention.

The Eagles arrived at a searing hot Beaverwood Club in Kent, knowing that only a victory would do. The team was relaxed, and enjoyed the youth game going on before it (where Kent were crowned as division winners, congratulations boys!), but when they came out for warm-ups, they were extremely focused.

The Eagles offense started with the ball and some strong running from Yomi Okuboyejo, behind Full-backs Rick Price and Michael Wilson Sr, set the tempo for the day, the Eagles were going to come out physical, and stick to their game plan.

After a couple of possessions each, it was the Eagles who made the breakthrough first, with QB Stuart Franklin hit WR Chris Cowley running free down the seam for the first touchdown of the day, taking the score to 6-0 after the missed PAT.

The Kent offense run game was keeping them in the game with some strong running from #12 Daniel Exell keeping the Eagles defense on their toes. Indeed it was Exell who got the next score, running to his left, and following some stellar blocking from his WR’s.

The Burden fell back onto the Eagles offense who went back to their game plan and came up with the score, #8 Franklin connecting with #12 Dale Hawes on the slant for the score. An excellent call on the PAT attempt led to #31 Okuboyejo running in the 2Pt conversation on the fake PAT, taking the score to 14-7.

With halftime approaching, the Eagles defense got a quick turnover on downs and set the offense up for a shot at the end zone with 4 seconds left on the clock. Franklin connected with #16 Jack Davis-Fletcher, however, “Sticks” was called down at just the 4 yard line. Instead of being disappointed with the failed attempt, the team went into the half upbeat, knowing a big second half performance would see them out.

At the start of the second half however, it was the Exiles special teams that came out firing, with a great kickoff return taking the ball all the way down the Eagles 9 yard line. The Eagles defense then came up huge, forcing a a 5-yard loss on a 1st down run, then an incomplete pass on 2nd down before Andy Larwill sacked the Exiles QB for a huge loss, leaving them with a 4th and goal on the Eagles 22.

As if that wasn’t enough, the Eagles defense managed to give the Offense the ball back on their own 39 yard line, pushing the Exiles offense back 30 yards in 4 plays. This defensive show buoyed the offense, who skilfully drove the ball down the field, including a 4th and short play to get the first down, before Franklin connected with a wide open Hawes in the endzone for his 2nd touchdown of the day. Hawes kicked the extra point, taking the score line to 21-7.

Later in the 3rd quarter, the Eagles got the ball back on their own 4 yard line, and a well timed blitz by the Exiles Defense forced QB Stuart Franklin to let the ball go earlier than he would have liked, and the Exiles duly walked it into the end zone for the touchdown, the converted PAT took the score line to 21-14.
The 3rd quarter provided the only sour point to an otherwise superb afternoon’s work for the Eagles with team captain Yomi Okuboyejo getting sent off for throwing a punch at an opponent after being choked on the ground after a run. The Eagles have not appealed this decision and Okuboyejo will miss the Eagles next game against the Bury Saints.

The Eagles defense rallied, giving the offense the ball back in the 4th quarter, with nearly 9 minutes left on the clock, and the offense duly delivered, with Franklin hitting #87 Chris Cowley (not Amanda Casey, as the Exiles commentator called, much to the delight of the rest of the Eagles) on a 40 yard pass to the back corner of the end zone. The PAT attempt failed, leaving the score at 27-14.

The Exiles strangely didn’t seem in a big rush to score and continued to huddle and wind seconds off the clock. The Eagles defense forced a 4th down situation with just over 2 minutes left on the clock, and the Exiles decided to punt the ball away, putting it out of bounds at the Eagles 5 yard line. This confusing decision, being 2 scores down, put the Eagles offense back on the field, and the strong running of the evergreen Michael Wilson Sr, interspersed with Exiles timeouts, got the first down, and allowed the Eagles to kneel out the game and take the important win.

Offensive Co-ordinator Neale McMaster said after the game “I’m absolutely delighted, this was a win for the whole organisation. We finessed a win on offense through our passing attack, and our running game set the tone for that, grinding out tough yards all day against a pretty tough defense. Our defense was outstanding once again, and is hands down the best in the league, having only conceded something like 29 points all season, the rest of our PA have came on Special Teams and Interceptions.

I’m really pleased with how our running game has come on over the course of the season, and I think that’s in large part to the progress of our 2 fullbacks. Both Mike and Rick have some fantastic physical skills, and we are utilising them more and more, as you seen today. Rick got an absolutely vital 4th down conversion that led to a score, and Mike finished the game off by running out the clock and getting that vital first down.

We have another game next weekend against a tough Bury Saints outfit, but if we can walk away with a win there, our place in the playoffs is guaranteed, so all our focus is now on getting prepared for Bury and securing our place in the playoffs.”

The next game against Bury will either secure the Eagles playoff chances or destroy them. At this point it’s ‘Win and get in’ for the Eagles, and they will be striving to do just that.

Eagles complete series rout of Cardinals

24 Jul

The Ouse Valley Eagles completed the two game series with Ipswich Cardinals on Sunday, walking away 58-0 victors, and finshing the series 2-0 winners, with an overall scoreline of 133-6. Three weeks earlier, the Eagles had travelled to Ipswich and handed out a big loss to a young Cardinals side, finishing 75-0.

On Sunday, the story was much the same.

The Cardinals showed up with only 20 players, and requested a running clock right from the start (this means the clock doesn’t stop, so the game only lasts 60 minutes), which the Eagles and Officials happily obliged.
This didn’t slow the Eagles down any, as after a quick 3 and out by the defense, it took only 2 plays before #31 Okuboyejo opened the scoring with a 12yd run. Okuboyejo also converted the 2Pt PAT.

The Eagles defense continued where they have been throughout the whole season, and dominated an Ipswich offense which consisted of linemen playing both ways and out of position players due to numbers.

#33 for Ipswich Jordan Mussington continued to be a bright spark for the Cardinals, as he was in the last game, and he shows all the signs of a running back with a big future ahead of him at just 18 years old.

However, it wasn’t long before the Eagles were on the score sheet again, with Okuboyejo bagging his 2nd TD of the day.

The Eagles took the opportunity to evaluate their players in a game situation, and with a big game against Kent looming, decided to rest starters where possible. The squad players grasped the opportunity with both hands, with Touchdowns for Kase Chibwe, Rick Price and Martin Day. Jack Davis-Fletcher also caught his first ever touchdown pass, on the receiving end of a lovely touch pass from Day.

The final score on the day was 58-0, which is a considerable amount bearing in mind the running clock.

Head Coach Will White had the following to say “I’m delighted with that win; it was a thoroughly professional job, against a very classy team in Ipswich. For our offense to put up 58 points with a running clock the full game is pretty impressive, and we didn’t punt the ball once the entire game, which is pleasing. Our defense continued their awesome form with a shutout, and the guys have just gone from strength to strength.

Our attention is now switched to Kent next week. If we win that game, we’ll be a prime spot for the playoffs, which was our goal at the start of the year. I feel pretty confident about that game, but I know they won’t make it easy for us. The managed to scrape a win at our field last time out, but we’ve came on so much since that game, not just on the field, but as a group of players coming together off it. I’m very proud of the way our guys have bought into what we are trying to do, and are striving to be great. “

Our thanks must go to the Cardinals who despite a very small squad, made the trip and played the game, a feat a lot of other clubs in the UK wouldn’t have done staring certain defeat in the face.

The Eagles next game is away to Kent Exiles, on Sunday 27th July with a playoff berth on the line. Details can be found below. If you can, please come and support your Eagles in their biggest game of the season, entrance is £3 at the gate.

Cardinals lose faith as Eagles soar

11 Jul

On what was a pretty bleak and dreary day on the East coast of England, the Ouse Valley Eagles enjoyed an excellent all round performance, coming away victorious with a 75-6 romping over the Ipswich Cardinals.

In what was the Eagles first ever bus trip, some may have expected a sluggish and perhaps under prepared side to come off the bus and play, but the 43 strong Eagles squad came out with a bang, and the defense started the game the way it meant to go on, conceding less than 100 yards on the entire day. A quick 3 and out by the defense gave the Eagles the ball in great field position, and despite scoring 3 touchdowns, no points were recorded on the first drive due to various penalties.

Again the Eagles defense continued to shut down the Cardinals Offense, giving the offense the ball back in excellent field position. #31 Yomi Okuboyejo duly took charge and ran in the touchdown to give the Eagles a lead they never looked like giving up.

Okuboyejo then added to his haul with a second TD in the first quarter to give a 14-0 nothing lead going into the 2nd quarter.

A clearly depleted Cardinals roster had worked extremely hard to keep the Eagles to just 14 points in the 1st quarter, and perhaps that was beginning to take its toll, as a huge second quarter for the Eagles began with Kalaba ‘Kase’ Chibwe running in his first of touchdowns of the day. The quarter continued with Kase adding another score, and Chris Parr adding 2 punt returns for touchdowns.

Overall on the day, there were 10 touchdowns scored, 7 on offense, 2 special teams returns and the defense came up big with a safety, with the only spot on an otherwise pristine score line being an interception on a screen pass late in the 4th quarter.

The scorer’s on the day for the Eagles were:
Yomi Okuboyejo x 2
Kalaba ‘Kase’ Chibwe x 2
Dale Hawes
Tyre Jones
Fred Shifflet x 2
Chris Parr x 2

The Eagles have a small break now and don’t play again until the return fixture against the Cardinals, at BIAS, on the 20th July.

The race to the playoffs is well underway, and your support means everything, please get along to BIAS for the final time this season to see you Eagles hopefully go 6-2.

Eagles in ‘Bedfordshire on Sunday’

18 Jun

After an interview with Offensive Coordinator Neale McMaster, Nick Smith of the Bedford on Sunday wrote the following article about the Eagles season so far.

EAGLES AIMING TO SOAR IN INAUGURAL SEASON

Written by NICK SMITH

Ouse Valley Eagles are in their first season of existence, but offensive co-ordinator Neale McMaster has high hopes for the fledgling team.

After an indifferent start to the season, the team is looking to press on and make big strides starting with Sunday’s home game against Essex Spartans.

The team have had an extended break due to Maidstone Pumas dropping out of the league, which saw them automatically awarded two wins.

Heading into Sunday’s game, McMaster said: “The break came at a great time for us. After a difficult loss we’ve had time to regroup and we’ve been working to fix the problems we’ve seen so far this season.

“Our aim for the season is to win every game we’ve got left. There’s no reason we can’t, with no disrespect meant to other teams. We’re just going to go out there and try and win our remaining games by as many points as possible and make the play offs.”

They are currently sat with a 3-2 record going into Sunday’s game against Essex, following a 19-0 shutout against Watford Cheetahs, a dominant 37-0 win over London Hornets and a heart-breaking loss to Kent Exiles last time out.
On the loss, McMaster said: “The game was there for the taking, we should have won. We had more yards and had more opportunities than our opponents but just couldn’t find a breakthrough and we lost 14-13.”

Having only formed as a merger between Bedfordshire Blue Raiders and Milton Keynes Pathfinders in January, the team has made great strides in a short period of time and will look to press on.
Kick off for Sunday’s game is at midday at Bedford International Athletics Stadium.

Eagles put Spartans to the Sword!

17 Jun

In a coming of age performance, the Ouse Valley Eagles ran all over the Essex Spartans, finishing 55-8 victors. Indeed ‘finishing’ was a key theme of the day, with almost every possession in the Red-Zone finishing in points.
The Eagles had set out their stake before the game to establish a running game that could carry the team through the rest of the season and into the playoffs, and after a the Eagles defense pushed the Spartans O to a quick 3 and out, the Eagles Offense did so with emphatic precision.

On the 2nd play from scrimmage, Running Back Yomi Okuboyejo broke free down the sideline for a huge 60 yard gain, taking the Eagles on their first trip into the Redzone. Finishing was something that had been emphasised throughout their 4 week hiatus from competitive games and the Eagles took that board, with starting QB Enrique Alonso finding receiver Dale Hawes in the end zone for the 6 points. Hawes then added the extra point to take his tally to 7 for the day.

The Eagles vaunted defense was living up to its name, and setting the tone for the rest of day, continually forced the Spartans to 3 and out drives, however some early offside penalties didn’t help their cause, the Spartans never really got anything going offensively after those freebies.

In what was to be a 3 touchdown performance from Okuboyejo, #31 got the offense going again, with some solid running behind a strong Eagles Offensive Line. It was just another few plays before Okuboyejo was seen striding into the end zone again, this time from 20 yards out, with Hawes again adding the extra point.

At 14-0, in the first half, the Eagles from earlier in the season would have taken their foot off the gas, but there was none of that today, as a further two scores from Okuboyejo took the score to 26-0 at the half.

Despite some changes in the Eagles personnel, the running game didn’t slow down, with Kalaba ‘Kase’ Chibwe bursting through the middle of the Spartans D and taking it to the house from over 50 yards out, with the 2 point conversion good, the score stood at 34-0 early in third quarter.

That finished the scoring in the 3rd quarter as the Spartans D began to shut down the Eagles Offense with some punishing run blitzes. The Eagles Defense was always on top here, despite never really getting into top gear, and keeping the shutout was critical to the Eagles playoffs hopes.

In the 4th quarter the Eagles rushing attack sprung back to life, with Fred Shifflet flying down the sideline for the 41 yard score. Hawes again added the extra point, taking the score line to 41-0. On the ensuing kickoff, the Spartans burst into life against an Eagles unit that sorely needed some practice time together, and ultimately that cost them, with the Spartans deservedly taking the ball back 70 yards for the 6 points, on an electric kick return. They added the 2 point conversion, making the score to 41-8.

With the two minute having just gone, many could been excused for leaving early, or turning their backs on the game thinking it was done, however that was not the case. In what was a thrilling end to the game, the Eagles rose up and really finished the game off, with a quick score from backup QB Martin Day to WR Tyre Jones from 18 yards making the score 48-8. Again, the Eagles were not finished, with some punishing tackling from Darren Gregory, the defense forced the turnover, giving the ball back to offense on the 34 yard line, with less than 20 seconds on the clock. It took one play, with Day finding Jones wide open in the end zone for the 6 points. Hawes added the PAT and the score was finished at 55-8.

It was an impressive performance by the Eagles, and with another week off to prepare for back to back against the Ipswich Cardinals they will be looking for this form to take them through to 6-2.

An ecstatic Neale McMaster said after the game “I’m absolutely delighted we managed to break that 50 point mark. From an offensive standpoint that was our target on the day. That’s no disrespect to the Spartans, they’re a decent outfit and you don’t win 3 games in this division without knowing how to play the game; however I was confident in our abilities coming off our best week of practice offensively.”

“Whilst Yomi game the MVP for the Offense, a huge shout out has to go to our Offensive Line and Full Backs, those guys were supreme today, and really set the tone up front.”

When asked why it had taken so long for the offense to get going this season, McMaster replied “It’s one of those things that comes with implementing a new system, and especially with the merger happening, there are a lot of personalities and everything just takes a while to bed in. We’ve been preaching patience from the start, and the players who are here have bought into the system we run, and that patience has started to give dividends. I’m hopeful we’ll be able to take this form and this confidence into the back to back series with Ipswich, that’ll make or break our season.”

Head Coach Will White echoed those sentiments, saying “We had been practicing hard during our off weeks to correct a few things we found wrong and it all came good on Sunday with our best performance to date. Neale McMaster my OC & our offense did an outstanding job of capitalizing on everything the Essex defense gave us to the tune of at least 400+ yards and 55 points, whilst the defense carried on doing a great job adding another 6 turnovers to an already huge takeaway total.”

All photos of the game have been published on our gallery. All the photos are courtesy of Mikey Cartwright at Ponderosa Pics.

The Eagles next game is away to the Ipswich Cardinals on the 29th June. Details of that game can be found on the website and social media sites. Our next and final regular season home game takes place on the 20th July against the Cardinals, with that game kicking off at 12pm at BIAS.

NEXT GAME: Playoffs, Round 1, Ouse Valley Eagles @ Solent Thrashers

17 Jun

OVE @ ST

So with the regular season coming to a close, the playoff seeding have been finalised, and are:

#1 – Watford Cheetahs – 10-0
#2 – Solent Thrashers – 10-0
#3 – Merseyside Nighthawks – 9-0-1
#4 – Clyde Valley Blackhawks – 9-1
#5 – Shropshire Revolution – 6-2-2
#6 – Farnham Knights – 9-1
#7 – Ouse Valley Eagles – 8-2
#8 – Edinburgh Wolves – 8-2

This means that we will will play Solent Thrashers, away at their ground in Southampton.

This will prove to be a tough test for the Eagles, as Solent as the odds on favourites to win the entire competition and gain promotion to the premier division for the next season.

The Thrashers have been a very hot team over the last few seasons, registering back-to-back 10-0 seasons, and playoff spots in the last two years. Last season the Thrashers were knocked out at the semi-final stage, with a narrow loss against eventual division winners, the Colchester Gladiators. Obviously this year they will be aiming to go one better.

As the pre-season favourites to win the division, the Thrashers have failed to disappoint this season, notching up 430 point sin only 8 regular games this year, and the #1 ranked offense in the country. Coming from what is believed by some to be the strongest conference in the division, its generally felt that they are the team most ready to make the jump up to the Premier division, and will looking to prove that against a travelling Eagles side.

After a tough start to their first season as a club, the Eagles have really come together over the past 5 games, and have gone undefeated in that stretch. An Offense that has generated 310 points in 8 games is impressive for a new team coming together and gave the Eagles the #7 ranked offense nationally.

As always in playoff football, it’ll come down to defenses, with both teams keeping a very stingy record when it comes to conceding points. The Thrashers have conceded only 64 points throughout the entire season, the 2nd highest total in the entire league. The Eagles defense however, has been the best in the entire nation, where save for a few offensive interceptions for scores, have conceded fewer than 50 points all year.

In what is shaping up as the best playoff match up of the quarter finals stage, it pits two defensive coaches against one another. Coach Russ Hewitt of the Thrashers, and Coach Will White of the Eagles. Expect a battle, and with the winner of this tie surely favourites to go to the final, it all makes for a very intriguing tie.

In January 2014 the Eagles were featured in the ‘Bedford on Sunday’ when Nick Smith interviewed Chairman Neale McMaster. The article is below, with a link to the original article at the bottom.

American Football: New team formed after merger
Written by NICK SMITH

A NEW American football team has been formed, as the Bedfordshire Blue Raiders and Milton Keynes Pathfinders have merged.

The two teams were divisional rivals last season, but have merged in order to become more of a force in the British American Football National League (BAFANL), forming the Ouse Valley Eagles.

Twenty-seven-year-old Neale McMaster, who was newly appointed chairman of the Raiders, contacted Pathfinders chairman Mark Chilton and the two managed to broker a merger of the two clubs.

McMaster, who is also offensive co-ordinator for the Eagles said: “We agreed to the merger because there was no point of having two mediocre teams in the area, when we could combine and make some noise.

“There is no danger of any potential players being turned away, as long as you are over 18.

“We are looking for at least 70 committed players and between 10 and 15 putting in shifts as and when they can.”
Despite the senior team only being open to those over 18, the Eagles are looking at bringing in a youth team to open the sport up to younger people in the near future.

The newly founded club has set ambitions targets, with Mr McMaster saying: “As a first year team, we will be looking to make the play offs. Given the depth of talent we should be strong enough to do that.

In the hunt for new players we will be casting the net for potential players across Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Northamptonshire and places like St. Neots.”

The team is currently based in Bedford, at the Bedford International Athletics Stadium (BIAS) [former home of the Raiders]. But they could move in the near future.

“BIAS currently gives us the best value for money, but we are looking at other venues. We want to find one with a stand to give the fans a real match day experience, rather than just at a field currently. We have had discussions with Cranfield University and also several local rugby clubs.”

With five months until the new season begins, Mr McMaster hopes to find a new home for the newly formed club before they start playing.
