Eagles quartet set for GB trials

08 Sep

The club are delighted to announce that four members of the senior side have been called up for the first set of trials for the Great Britain Lions.

Wide Receiver Ross Hubbard, Defensive Tackle Andy Larwill, Defensive Back Chris Parr and Running Back Paul Settle have been invited to the trials, which take place later this month.

Commenting on the news, Club Chairman Neale McMaster said:

“Naturally I am thrilled that the lads have been called up to the first GB trial of the autumn. It is a testament to the work they have put in during the season and I am sure the experience will stand them in good stead as we prepare for the 2016 campaign.”

Congratulations to all four players.

Preview: Eagles @ Solent Thrashers

21 Aug

The Eagles travel to the south coast this Sunday to take on the Solent Thrashers in the SFC 1 semi-final at Test Park (2.30pm kick off).

Sunday’s game will be the third meeting of the two sides in the club’s short history. Last season Solent knocked the Eagles out of the play-offs at the quarter final stage, and earlier this season a record-breaking field goal was the difference as the Thrashers edged a close one 17-14.

Since that defeat the Eagles have won three on the bounce; 35-15 against Cambridgeshire Cats, 23-18 vs Birmingham Bulls and 38-27 two weeks ago at the Hertfordshire Cheetahs.

The Thrashers meanwhile lost to Colchester before bouncing back with a thrilling 33-33 tie with the Farnham Knights, and a 51-0 demolition of East Kent Mavericks to finish the season the #2 ranked team in SFC 1 with a record of 7 wins, 2 defeats and 1 tie.

They have one of the meanest defences in Division One, with only the Edinburgh Wolves (89) conceding less points than the Thrashers’ 135 during the regular season.

Our hosts also have the fourth best offence in Division One. Their total of 335 points scored was bettered by the Merseyside Nighthawks (462), Farnham Knights (405) and Edinburgh Wolves (398).

In team news, offensive lineman Danny Cousins remains doubtful due to a knee injury sustained in the victory over the Cheetahs but the Eagles welcome back a number of defensive players who missed the game, including Andy Larwill and Darren Gregory. Gareth Pullen is also expected to be fit to play.

Eagles to meet the Thrashers in semi-final

11 Aug

Following the decision by the Colchester Gladiators to withdraw from the post-season the Eagles have been confirmed as the third seed in the SFC 1 play-offs, and will travel to the South Coast to face the Solent Thrashers in the semi-final on Sunday 23rd August.

Despite their 38-27 defeat to the Eagles at the weekend the Hertfordshire Cheetahs move up to the fourth seed, and will face the #1 ranked Farnham Knights in the other semi-final.

Sunday’s victory over the Cheetahs takes the Eagles into the post-season for the second successive season high on confidence following three wins in a row against divisional opponents.

It will be third time the Eagles and Thrashers have met in the club’s short history. Last season Solent knocked the Eagles out of the play-offs at the quarter final stage, and earlier this season a record-breaking field goal was the difference between the two sides as the Thrashers edged passed 17-14.

Solent Thrashers v Ouse Valley Eagles

The winner of each game will face off in the SFC 1 Final on Sunday 13th September, kicking off at 4pm at Leicester Road Stadium, Hinckley, Leicester, with a place in the SFC Premier Division up for grabs.

Eagles launch new Logo

Eagles
25 Jun

logo_color_square

The Ouse Valley Eagles, in partnership with 2G Creative are delighted to announce the clubs new logo and branding moving forward.

presentation

With the new logo and colour added, the Eagles continue to be at the forefront of design and marketing in British American Football, understanding that the look off the field is just as important to current and prospective players as the results and performances are on it.

The move see’s the club combine the colours of the two founding clubs, Bedfordshire Blue Raiders and Milton Keynes Pathfinders, to form the ‘Cool Purple’ that can be seen in the logo.

The ‘Fused O’ design was created to further pay homage to the two founding clubs coming together, showing the two half’s coming together to form the O.

“We wanted to create a logo that would represent our club moving forward, but also show we are proud of where we come from” said Chairman Neale McMaster.

“One of the goals for the logo was to create something that shows former Bedford and Milton Keynes players and staff that their legacy is still going strong. Whilst the name may have changed, the history of the club is based on their achievements. We really wanted to honour that as best we could, and the guys at 2G Creative have done a tremendous job with it.”

“Our main colours will remain as White and Silver, and it was presumed black would be added also, but we wanted to continue to push the boundaries and remain unique in Britball, the ‘Cool Purple’ provides that. We’ll be adding it onto our merchandise along with the new logo, and it gives us a lot of options regarding kit in the future. “

“Our original logo was awesome, but after allowing ourselves to bed in as a club, we didn’t feel it represented everything it should. This new logo represents the Eagles, and is completely unique. This is something we will be proud to use moving forward through the years.”

Colchester stun Eagles

20 May

The Ouse Valley Eagles travelled to Colchester on Sunday for their first Inter Conference fixture of their American Football National League Division 1 campaign.  A disappointingly lacklustre performance saw the Eagles fall to their first defeat of the season and the Gladiators record their first victory.

It could scarcely have started better for the Eagles as free safety Kevin Kong intercepted opposing Quarterback Curtis Bourke’s first pass of the game on the second play from scrimmage.  Kong returned the ball 25 yards into the corner of the end zone for the opening score, with Ross Hubbard converting the PAT.  An uneventful first 15 minutes was played out with Ouse Valley leading by 7-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Colchester played their way back into the game during the second quarter and deservedly levelled when Bourke kept the ball on a triple-option play and swept into the Eagles’ endzone on a first and goal.  The half-time score was tied at 7 points apiece.

The Eagles have been a second-half team so far this season securing all three of their wins in the last two minutes of each game.  An improvement in performance was required in the second half.  Matters did not improve immediately for the Eagles with Colchester taking the lead with a second touchdown from Bourke in the 3rd quarter.  The Gladiators extended their advantage with a short run following a turnover in Eagles territory.  A lead they would not relinquish.

The Eagles did find some momentum in the fourth quarter and a sustained drive saw Quarterback Justin Laroda find returning Tight End Jack Judge for a well-timed eight yard touchdown pass.  The Eagles had the ball again as the clock was running down towards the end of the game.  The Gladiator’s defence held strong though and time expired with Ouse Valley driving.  The final score was 21-14 in favour of the home side.

Few Ouse Valley players can, in all honesty, be pleased with their performance and overall the Eagles did not match the standards set in earlier matches.  They fall to 3 wins and 1 loss but retain top spot in the table based on fewest points conceded by teams with the same percentage record.  The division promises to be a close run affair for the rest of the season as, with Ouse Valley and Farnham both losing this weekend, after four games there are no undefeated sides left.

Ouse Valley now has two weeks to prepare for two Inter Conference home fixtures back-to-back.  Farnham Knights are next up in a top-of-the-table clash on 7 June with East Kent Mavericks visiting the following Sunday.  An improvement in execution and effort will be both expected and needed against strong and experienced opposition.  We look forward to seeing you all at Bedford International Athletics Stadium for these match-ups.  Both kick-off at 12:00 Noon and the admission is £2.00 for adults.

PREVIEW: Eagles @ Bulls

22 Apr

The Eagles soar into their third game in the first four weeks of the season – having gone 2 and 0 to kick off 2015 thanks to beating the Hertfordshire Cheetahs a fortnight ago – against the league favourite, Birmingham Bulls.

The Bulls are a storied franchise in Britball, and with over 30 continuous years in the league it’s safe to say they are certainly the more experienced of the two teams.

The Bulls may well feel hard done by to find themselves in Division 1 after having competed at the Premier League level for a number of years. Last year they went 4-5 in the Premiership North. The league saw fit to demote them in restructure, and that has led to this weekend’s exciting matchup.

The Bulls have undergone a massive overhaul in the off-season, seeing a lot of experienced coaches and players leave, which has opened the way for Bulls legend Mark Pagett to be named the Head Coach.

Coach Pagett has brought in a new staff, some fresh faces in the team, and renewed some old partnerships with the likes of GB Students Captain Tom Levick rejoining the club after a few seasons played in Europe.

Sunday’s game will be their first of the season, kicking off against an Eagles side that has fought hard to gain back-to-back victories against the Cats and the Cheetahs. Both teams are well-known for having tough and aggressive defenses, so expect another battle, with points at a premium.

The Eagles are buoyed by the return of Running Back Zak Henry after missing the last game with a virus, and Defensive Captain Gareth ‘Tish’ Pullen who has returned from holiday.

Expect a tough battle, and an exciting, nail-biting game in Birmingham. Could we see the Eagles emerge as early season favourites for the title after going 3-0? Will the Bulls live up to the huge expectations after being demoted? Join us on Sunday at 2:30pm to find out!

If you are unable to make it to the game we will be providing live, play-by-play coverage via our Twitter channel from 2.30pm.
